7 things to do for free: Cusco, Peru
We asked staff at the South American Explorers’ Cusco Clubhouse for their tips for freebies in the town…
1. Salsa dance
Many of Cusco’s clubs offer free lessons, generally between 9-11pm – take a class, then practise through the night
2. Appreciate art
Irq’i Yachay (‘Wisdom of the Children’) Museum contains 1,000-plus works of art by rural mountain children; open 10am-5pm, Mon-Fri
3. Drink for free
Many places hand out vouchers for free drinks – they’re genuine and offer a cost-free night out
4. Chill out on high
Check out the views from the artsy, quaint pedestrian-only barrio of San Blas, north-east of Plaza de Armas. The white adobe church boasts elaborate woodworking and gold-leaf altar
5. Find a fiesta
You can guarantee there’ll be a festival somewhere, sometime on your Peru trip; ask around for party pointers
6. Locate the logo
Stroll down cobblestoned Hatun Rumiyoc. Near the Archbishop’s Palace is the 12-cornered stone popularly recognized as the logo for Cuzqueña beer
7. Window shop
Browse Cusco’s markets to see local art and craft, including pottery, gourd-carving and alpaca wool clobber
