Kentucky’s love affair for bourbon goes back centuries, with the first commercial whisky distillery dating back to 1783. Fast forward to today and the state produces 95% of the world’s bourbon, with more than a third made in Kentucky’s largest city, Louisville. It’s here where bourbon heritage is woven into the city’s very fabric, from its culinary scene, festivals, and even bourbon-themed bars. Here are seven ways to experience bourbon for yourself in Louisville.

1. Head out on the Urban Bourbon Trail

Discover everything from traditional pubs to lively cocktail lounges (Louisville Tourism)

To really appreciate the city’s deep bourbon heritage, you need to go bar hopping – Bourbon City style. The Urban Bourbon Trail highlights some of the city’s bars and restaurants, ranging from traditional pubs to lively cocktail lounges and historic hotels that once served the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Al Capone. Each stop on the trail offers at least 60 different varieties of bourbon, speciality bourbon cocktails and bourbon flights, with knowledgeable staff on hand to explain what you’re tasting. Bourbon’s primary notes of vanilla, smoke and oak makes it ideal for cooking as well, which you’ll find at restaurants along the trail featuring oysters and bourbon-flavoured ice cream.

2. Visit the Frazier History Museum

Immersive bourbon exhibitions await (Louisville Tourism)

If you’re keen to not only taste Louisville’s bourbon but also learn about its history, then there are few better places than the Frazier History Museum. The official starting point of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail™, the museum delves into bourbon’s profound heritage through The Spirit of Kentucky exhibit, as well as allowing you to soak up the state’s wider past through its other galleries, artefacts and, bourbon-themed gift shop. You can get hands-on too with the museum’s Craft Your Own Cocktail Experience, where in 45 minutes you’ll be able to perfect an Old Fashioned, Louisville’s official cocktail.

3. Join the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience

Join the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience (Marty Pearl)

Honouring the legacy of the founder of Louisville’s original commercial distillery, the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience takes visitors on an immersive journey through 250 years of bourbon history with interactive exhibits, guided tours, and tastings of Williams’ signature whiskies. The artisanal distillery is situated on historic Whiskey Row, the Wall Street of whiskey that was once home to dozens of warehouses serving the bourbon and tobacco industries. The Evan Williams Bourbon Experience was also the first distillery to reopen on Whiskey Row since the Prohibition era, and features an underground speakeasy where you can enjoy additional tastings, classes and other Bourbon experiences.

4. Go behind the scenes at Pursuit Spirits

Get hands-on at Pursuit Spirits (Pursuit Spirits)

Also based on Whiskey Row, Pursuit Spirits is where you can go beyond the traditional distillery tour. You can choose from a range of different hands-on experiences like ordering your own custom flights of bourbon and sampling rare and limited–edition bourbons. Known around the world for their Bourbon Pursuit podcast, this upscale tasting room allows you to craft your own cocktail, pick your own barrel of bourbon, bottle it and even customise your own label.

5. Get a taste of Louisville at London Cocktail Week

London Cocktail Week offers a true taste of Louisville (Louisville Tourism)

If you can’t get to Louisville just yet, then let Louisville come to you. The literal spirit of Kentucky will be represented by several of the state’s distilleries at London Cocktail Week from 9-19 October 2025. During this celebration of cocktail culture, Louisville’s presence will be keenly felt across the British capital. Among the events, there’ll be a bourbon and bubbles high tea in partnership with Angel’s Envy distillery at Fitz’s Bar in Russell Square, a pop-up experience at Soho guitar store Sixty Sixty Sounds and a ‘bourbon takeover’ at London Bridge bar Amazing Grace, set in a church.

6. Stay in bourbon-themed accommodation

Stay at Hotel Distil which is housed in a former distillery (Hotel Distil)

Bourbon permeates every aspect of Louisville life and that extends to its accommodations, with bourbon-themed places to stay splashed across the city. The historic Louisville Bourbon Inn blends Southern charm with contemporary comfort in a Victorian-era mansion, and can even arrange guided Bourbon tours. Only one block from Whiskey Row, Hotel Bourré Bonne is the newest addition to the city’s boutique hotels, offering an upscale steakhouse and rooftop pool and bar. Housed in a former distillery, no stay gets you closer to Louisville’s bourbon past than Hotel Distil, Autograph Collection, where a nightly toast marking the repeal of Prohibition showcases the city’s warm hospitality.

7. Join in with the festivities

Enjoy one of the many music festivals (Louisville Tourism)

For a city that loves its bourbon, it’s no surprise Louisville knows how to party. Pairing its beloved drink with music, the four-day Bourbon & Beyond festival every September welcomes a wealth of world-class musicians – past headliners have included The Killers, The Black Keys, Sting and Bruno Mars. There’s plenty for whiskey lovers as well, from cocktail workshops to ‘speakeasy’ experiences and chances to meet local experts. Bourbon is well represented at the month-long Kentucky Derby Festival (April-May) and its iconic horse race too. The Bourbon Classic has been called a “bourbon lover’s fantasy camp” and takes places every February, giving connoisseurs an inside look at some of Kentucky’s top bourbon brands.

With a renowned food scene, vibrant arts district and long legacy of sports, Louisville invites travellers from near and far to immerse themselves in the city’s rich history and genuine hospitality.
