In late November, a group of Wanderlust members congregated in London to meet Bettany Hughes and be transported by her to the extraordinary open-air museum of AlUla in Saudi Arabia.

During a captivating hour in conversation with Wanderlust’s founding editor Lyn Hughes, Bettany took us on a journey through time, introducing us to the Nabateans, an enigmatic people who were the ancient world’s premier traders in frankincense, gold, bitumen and pearls.

Their former trading centre of Hegra, AlUla, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Bettany recently filmed there for her Channel 4 series Lost Worlds: The Nabateans. Bettany took us through its many wonders and reflected on how Nabatean culture still survives today.

Don’t miss Bettany’s captivating stories on exploring the astonishing historical sites and breathtaking landscapes of AlUla, on camel trekking, rock art, stargazing, and how she ended up with the quandary of what to do with a baby goat she was gifted. Expect recommendations, tips and inspiration aplenty on how to make the most of a trip to this unforgettable destination.
