Florida is best known for its beaches, wildlife-filled wetlands and world-famous theme parks – but beyond those big hitters, the state has a wealth of cultural riches that are sometimes lesser explored.

From a glittering ballet season to a song-writing festival, we reveal the cultural experiences that should be on your radar in the Sunshine State.

1. Lose yourself in the Sarasota Ballet

Arguably no city in Florida packs as much of a cultural punch as Sarasota. Between revered art complex The Ringling (the vision of circus magnate John Ringling) and the Sarasota Opera, this sand-fringed city has plenty to satisfy culture seekers.

A highlight is the celebrated Sarasota Ballet, whose 2025/26 season is glittering. Mark your calendars for Stars and Stripes (27-28 March 2026), a neoclassical masterpiece by lauded choreographer George Balanchine, which will be performed in celebration of America’s 250th birthday next year. Equally anticipated is Lilac Garden (30 January-2 February 2026) by Antony Tudor, a heart-tugging psychological ballet that premiered in London in 1936.

2. Discover cultural Orlando

Orlando is so much more than the sum of its theme parks. Top-notch art museums and performance centres mean that Florida’s Disney capital is a cultural hotspot too. And some notable developments this year are continuing to cement the city’s place on the cultural map.

One of the most recent additions is Steinmetz Hall, a world-class concert and theatre venue opened in the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, as part of a major expansion. It’s a cultural home for the likes of the Orlando Ballet and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.

Orlando’s nearest communities have cultural jewels to share too. Head north to Winter Park, where you’ll find the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art (known for its Tiffany masterpieces) and the Rollins Museum of Art, on the Rollins College Campus. The Alfond Inn hotel now has a new satellite exhibition space showcasing work from the Rollins.

Another must see is the Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities (29-30 January 2026) in nearby Eatonville. The event celebrates the legacy of the lauded writer, who lived in this community, and also honours the cultural contributions of individuals from African descent.

3. Hear the Sunshine State’s top singer-songwriters

Every September, the Island Hopper Songwriting Festival takes over Fort Myers, with performances across Captiva Island, Cape Coral and Fort Myers Beach (pictured) (Shutterstock)

Tennessee may claim to be the USA’s songwriting capital – but Florida gives the Volunteer State a run for its money each fall. During September, around 60 singer-songwriters descend on the Fort Myers region for the Island Hopper Songwriting Festival (19-28 September 2025).

The festival focuses on raw, acoustic sets and attendees can enjoy around 80 performances across Captiva Island, Cape Coral, Fort Myers Beach and Downtown Fort Myers. This year, the festival will wrap up with a performance by country star Chris Young at Pink Shell Beach Resort and Marina.

4. Enjoy fine art in paradise

From the respected Naples Philharmonic orchestra to a tangle of independent galleries, Florida’s Paradise Coast has plenty of culture to share. But the most highly respected institution of all is The Baker Museum in Naples. With a focus on American and Mexican modernism, its dazzling collection includes 3,500 objects and is displayed over 15 galleries – highlights include works by Pablo Picasso and Georgia O’Keeffe.

Hurricane Irma forced the closure of the museum in 2017, but it reopened in 2019, restored and expanded with a new rooftop sculpture terrace. This spring, the museum was also awarded accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), a significant recognition that cemented its status as one of the country’s leading institutions.

5. Hear country music by the beach

Florida’s underrated Panhandle region borders Alabama and its culture takes plenty of influence from the Southern states. That includes a penchant for country music, which is celebrated each year in Panama City Beach with The Gulf Coast Jam (28-31 May 2026)

More than 100,000 country music lovers typically arrive in the beachside bolthole for the festival, which will play host to stars of the genre including Chris Stapleton, Keith Urban and Post Malone this year.

6. Explore Florida’s mural capital

St Pete-Clearwater is deservedly hailed as “Florida’s mural capital”. The destination is decorated with some 600 pieces of street art, from bold pop-art-style portraits to whimsical abstract works.

Beginning in 2015, the SHINE Mural Festival (11-23 October 2025) – which sees international muralists use the city as a live canvas – recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. At the last festival, 15 colourful new works were added. Beyond the street art, other cultural highlights include the The Dalí Museum, which holds the most extensive collection of the artists’ work outside of Spain.

Undeniably one of Florida’s cultural powerhouses, Miami draws in cultural explorers with its art museums, mural districts and festivals. Most important of all is Art Basel Miami (5-7 December 2025) – the largest contemporary art fair on the continent.

It brings together works from thousands of international creators and almost 300 galleries at the Miami Beach Convention Center in South Beach. The prestigious event coincides with Miami Art Week, which celebrates creativity in the city with alternative fairs, talks and live music.
