From the Editor: The best from myWanderlust this week
What’s going on? I’ll tell you what’s going on…
We’ve just gone and chosen a winner for our Festival writing competition, is all! Chocolateyclaire walked away with a bag of travel goodies for her tale of travelling from Dehli to Agra at the height of the Holi festival. You can check it out here.
Over at the forum, Liz Cleere asks whether it is as good as the first time second time around. She’s talking about places, of course, and my initial response is ‘it depends’. I love Kathmandu and Istanbul every time I visit. And places where I return to visit friends and Vespas, like Livorno, actually get better with familiarity. Oludeniz in Turkey, however, is unrecognisable from the funky little traveller hangout I found back in 1993. What has been your experience? Tell us here.
myWanderlusters continue to need help and I’m afraid you’re the only one who can assist them. Cycleeast wants to get active in August and wants some tips. Brendaconybeare is going Greek Island hopping. Where’s Beccs when you need her?
Just back from has been colonised by Liz Cleere this week. A jaunt through southern India has thrown up a treasure trove of up-to-the-minute advice and tips. Mamallapuram? Watch out for the undertow if you go swimming. And don’t befriend the local puppies. Kaniyakumari? The esplanade has a touch of Bexhill about it. And the ferries are rusting tin cans. Chennai? Check out the Dakshan Spice restaurant opposite the SIET college.
Mik, meanwhile is back from cuddling pandas in China and can’t speak highly enough of Yangshuo. Biggest tip? Always carry loo roll and anti-bac gel.
Just as Liz Cleere annexed just back from, Nigerian Kiwi has planted his flag over at experiences. He has posted not one, but four tales from his South East Asian odyssey from Penang to Kanchanaburi to Bangkok to the end. Leeanne tells all about her three week adventure in the Himalayas back in 2002. And Rhoda1 has posted a really lovely piece about the high roads in Bhutan. What an adventure.
Leeanne has supplemented her post with a selection of photos from Nepal over at our photography section. Rhoda1 presents a restive collection of rural panoramas from the Lake District. And Julia69 takes us through Macedonia. Elsewhere, nana arlina has uploaded some pics from Nelson in New Zealand and AngelaR, a selection of shots from the Grand Canyon.
Finally, make sure you check out the photos Scott Bennett has posted from his recent trip to Papua New Guinea. They’ll have you entering our competition to win a trip to PNG.
I guarantee it.
