Off the beaten track in Lithuania

With its baroque-lined capital, near-endless midsummer days and Pagan heritage (becoming the last country in Europe to convert to Christianity), Lithuania possesses an otherworldly atmosphere like nowhere else on the continent. It’s a wild patchwork of lakes and brooding forests, wildernesses that are your ticket to completely falling off the map. You can play out your childhood fantasies by camping out in a tipi among the many lakes which pool Aukštaitija National Park (Lithuania’s oldest), spending a day canoeing the park’s deepest lake, Tauragnas, or bedding down in a treehouse on the banks of serene Lake Neprekšta in eastern Lithuania. Prefer to be active? Any segment of the 747km-long Misko Takas trail will have you treading among verdant forests, remote mining villages and emerald-wrapped villages without seeing another soul. On Lithuania’s west coast dolphins, seals and moose treat the Curonian Spit as their playground but even Lithuania’s capital Vilnius has hidden gems – untamed Bernardino Cemetery and the ghostly grandeur of Verkiai Palace will prove that.

Top tip: 10% cashback on hotel and tour bookings with Revolut*

To truly explore all that Lithuania has to offer, you will need a guide to really unravel their secrets. Plan in advance and you can take advantage of Revolut Premium’s exclusive accommodation rates not just in Lithuania, but all over Europe. Plus, you’ll get 10% cash back on all accommodation and tour bookings.

Taking the road less travelled in Bhutan

Closed off to the world until the mid 1970s, Bhutan has more secrets to spill than most countries. Even its main icon, the cliff-clinging Tiger’s Nest monastery, only receives a handful of visitors in comparison to other world wonders. Bhutan’s seldom-trodden nature only adds to its mystique; its remoteness has embedded a time-frozen feel within this Himalayan kingdom. Cowbells still tinkle in the hills, brightly robed monks scuttle around dzongs and monasteries snuggled in valleys and, as a result, it’s easy to find pristine landscapes to roam. Don your hiking boats and hit the walking trails which web the grassy Phobjikha Valley, where you can spy black-necked cranes, wild boar and witness untouched monk life at the 17th-century monastery of Gangtey Goenpa. Every aspect of life in Bhutan is designed to temper your pulse, a point proven in the leisurely rafting adventures you can have through the leafy Punakha Valley, under the gaze of snow-dusted mountains.

Top tip: Free transfer of money with Revolut

When you’re somewhere as secret as Bhutan’s Himalayan valleys, it can prove tricky when you realise you need a bit more money to help see you through the rest of your travels. Revolut Premium has your back, allowing your friends and family to send you top-up cash quickly with the best exchange rates possible – with no nasty hidden fees either.

Far-flung adventures in Micronesia

Floating in the western Pacific Ocean and nearly 800 miles away from its nearest neighbour in Nauru, it’s safe to say you can’t get much further flung than Micronesia. But its diversity of experiences belies its remoteness, with everything from ancient ruins to wartime shipwrecks. The crumbling temples, houses and burial chambers of Nan Madol on Pohnpei are arguably the archipelago’s centrepiece, once the capital of the Saudeleur dynasty and affectionately dubbed the ‘Venice of Micronesia’ thanks to its complex network of canals. Lelu island lays claim to older ruins, a walled city dating back to the 13th century during the reign of the Kosraean dynasty, while Pohnpei also harbours the remains of Fort Alphonso XIII, one of the few colonial Spanish sites left in Micronesia. Dip below the surface and you’ll glide among the coral-encrusted Second World War ships in Truk Lagoon, the vessels becoming artificial reefs for spotted eagle rays, black-tipped reef sharks and fish like scorpionfish and Napoleon wrasses.

Top tip: Enjoy the use of airport lounges with Revolut

As exciting as far-flung adventures are, with the time it takes to fly to places like Micronesia, you’ll want your airport time to be as relaxing and as stress-free as possible. Luckily, Revolut Premium includes access to airport lounges, so you can get your time away off to a great start. Plus, if your flight is delayed by more than an hour, you can get free airport lounges for you and your friends.

Authentic experiences in Uzbekistan

Once one of the most important stops on the legendary Silk Road, many of Uzbekistan’s ancient cities have changed little since that golden era. It was the country’s expert craftsmanship that drew plenty of admirers as merchants, pilgrims and travellers passed through and skilled artisans still fashion heritage creations today. You can learn from the locals themselves in the three main outposts the Silk Road weaved through: Samarkand, Khiva and Bukhara. As its name suggests silk was a sought-after commodity, something you can see for yourself during a visit to a silk carpet workshop in Khiva or by learning how to make silk paper (a popular choice for Persian and Arabic manuscripts around a thousand years ago) in Samarkand. Silk Road trading must have been hungry work so spend time with a local family in Bukhara, who will teach you how to make the country’s national dish, plov, a rice dish that proves tasty fuel for exploring the minarets, elaborate mosques and medressas that once greeted weary merchants millennia ago.

Top tip: Free foreign exchange purchases with Revolut

Revolut Premium has its finger on the pulse when it comes to monitoring the latest exchange rates, ensuring you get the best deal when you spend abroad without having to pay anything extra for the privilege. This is especially good to know if you’re in Uzbekistan, where you can channel your inner merchant and snap up some expertly made Silk Road crafts.

A walk on the wild side in Uganda

Neighbouring two of Africa’s powerhouses in Kenya and Tanzania, Uganda might slip under the radar of wildlife first-timers but for those a little more intrepid it offers something its two neighbours can’t: epic encounters with mountain gorillas. Home to more than half of the world’s mountain gorillas, tracking them of foot through the emerald-coated undergrowth of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of life’s epic wildlife experiences. But the country’s mix of volcanoes, rainforest, crater lakes and mist-wrapped woodland offer diverse settings for more primate encounters beyond Uganda’s shaggy headliners, including tracking chimpanzees, colobus monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys in Kibale National Park and seeking out golden monkeys in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. In truth, visit almost anywhere in Uganda and you’re in for an animal treat, whether it’s cruising Lake Albert in Murchison Falls National Park to glimpse elusive shoebills or peering in the canopies of the Ishasha plains in Queen Elizabeth National Park to lock eyes with its tree-climbing lions.

Top tip: Free ATM withdrawals with Revolut

Travel is full of moments where you need cash quickly. Paying for a coffee in a local Ugandan restaurant, or tipping your guide after they led you to see the gorillas are just two. Whatever you need the cash for, Revolut Premium allows you to withdraw up to £400 per month, fee-free.
