7 of the best things to do in Riga
From Art Nouveau architecture to craft beer, Latvia’s capital has a lot to offer
The unexpected success of animated movie Flow (2024) saw Latvia catapulted into the spotlight last year, putting this hidden gem onto many traveller’s radars for the first time.
Most begin their exploration of the country in Riga, and while you can snap a photo with the famous animated cat by the Freedom Monument, there’s so much more to do in this Baltic capital.
Whether you’re into music and architecture, or just want to try some brilliant craft beers, here are the best things to do in Riga.
1. Climb to the top of St. Peter’s Church

Riga’s tallest church has a viewing tower at its top, offering spectacular vistas of the city’s many churches as well as the Daugava River. The weather vane at the very top, which is in the shape of a rooster, has become one of the city’s symbols, and you can see one of the previous holders of the position (there have been seven since the 15th century) within the church itself.

2. Catch a live performance at Riga Cathedral

While those looking for a full-length performance should head to the Latvian National Opera, Riga Cathedral is a great option for those who are short on time. Lasting just 20 minutes, the organ music shows feature performances from locally trained musicians at midday daily.

3. See the folksongs cabinet at the National Library of Latvia

Folksongs are a key part of the Latvian national identity, and you can learn more about this on a visit to the National Library of Latvia. Here, you’ll find the Dainu Skapis, or cabinet of folk songs, a collection of more than 200,000 song texts gathered in the latter half of the 19th century by Krisjanis Barons.
The building itself is absolutely spectacular, and you can find out more about the various architectural elements of the ‘Castle of Light’ on a guided tour.

4. Grab a beer at one of the city’s top breweries

A country of beer lovers, there are around 70 craft breweries currently operating in Latvia. That number seems small, until you recall the population stands at just 1.8 million – meaning there is one brewery for every 25,000 people.
Local tip: Gustavs, who works at Valmiermuiza’s Beer Embassy, suggests you head out of the Old Town if you’re looking for a good pint. Some of his favourite bars include Lofts and Labietis.
5. Go on a boat cruise along the Riga Canal

If you’re looking for a different way to see the city, opt for a boat cruise. These pass along the Riga Canal and the Daugava River, and tick off a lot of the main sights in one go.

6. Admire the city’s Art Nouveau buildings

While the first Art Nouveau buildings may have popped up in Brussels, the architectural style found its true home in Riga. In the city centre, around a third of the buildings were built in Art Nouveau style, and you can learn more about it at the Art Nouveau Museum.
Alberta iela, the street that the museum sits on, is lined with stunning buildings, but it’s best explored with a knowledgeable guide. We visited with Andra Brice (andraguideriga.com/en) as part of a wider cultural tour of the city.

7. Shop local at Āgenskalns Market

Recently reopened in 2022, Āgenskalns Market is a compact alternative to Riga Central Market. You’ll still be able to try local produce (and beer) and support small businesses but in a quieter setting.
The market’s outdoor area regularly hosts concerts, and it’s also the setting for a flea market every weekend. Keep an eye on the market’s Instagram page for future events.
