Jane Austen 250: All the ways you can celebrate the anniversary of the famed English author’s birth Jane Austen 250: All the ways you can celebrate the anniversary of the famed English author’s birth
Jane Austen may have been writing about the landed gentry of the Regency era, but her works speak to universal truths, granting them mass appeal even today.
The English author certainly left her mark on the literary, and the wider, world, giving us the ever-popular enemies-to-lover trope and spawning numerous adaptations – from the 1995 Pride and Prejudice TV series with Colin Firth and the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film with Keira Knightley to more modern interpretations like the YouTube series The Lizzie Bennet Diaries in 2012, and Netflix’s Persuasion in 2022. You’ll even find Austen on the £10 note.
Now, 250 years after her birth on 16 December 1775, the places she once called home are marking the occasion with special events throughout the year. Having been born in Steventon, Austen lived across Chawton, Bath and Southampton, before spending her final weeks in Winchester – with each place observing the anniversary year in different ways.

Gifted to Austen in December 1794, this will be the first time the writing desk has returned to Southampton since she lived there between 1806 and 1809. ‘The Most Tiresome Place in the World’: Jane Austen & Bath
Where? No. 1 Royal Crescent, Bath
When? 5 July-2 November
While Bath is named in all of Austen’s novels, and both Persuasion and Northanger Abbey are totally or partially set there, Austen had a complicated relationship with her city. While living in Bath, the author wrote very little, mostly letters and only one manuscript, yet the scandals and shallowness of the city gave her ample inspiration for her later works. The temporary exhibition at No. 1 Royal Crescent will explore this relationship, and will run alongside a contemporary artistic response.
