Iceland’s first cascading waterfall lagoon is now open Iceland’s first cascading waterfall lagoon is now open
We’ve all heard of Iceland‘s famed Blue Lagoon, but now there’s a new geothermal attraction to put on your radar: Laugarás Lagoon.
Found on the banks of the Hvítá River around an hour’s drive from Reykjavik, Laugarás Lagoon is the country’s first cascading waterfall lagoon.
Across the two levels, there are 1,000 sq m of therapeutic waters maintained at 37 to 39°C for you to soak in. Alongside the main pool, you can also take a dip in the forest pool (39-40°C), and the cold plunge pool next to the sauna, which is a balmy 5 to 10°C.
Should you get thirsty during the experience, there are two swim-up bars for you to order drinks from.

A complete wellness experience, Laugarás Lagoon is also home to a dry sauna and a wet sauna, both of which are on the forest edge and offer stunning views of the banks of the Hvítá River.
Better still, the lagoon is open until 9pm during the winter months, meaning you’ll have the chance to spot the aurora borealis during your spa visit.
The design of the lagoon pays tribute to the country’s historic turf houses, which have grass roofs and blend into the surrounding landscape.
Sauna soaking and cold plunges can be exhausting (first world problems, we know), but guests can get their energy stores up by dining at Ylja Restaurant.
Developed by one of Iceland’s best-known chefs, Gísli Matt, the seasonal menu covers everything from light snacks to a five-course fine dining experience.
