These are the world’s most-visited museums for 2024 – and while number one won’t surprise anyone, we doubt you’ll have visited them all.
With 8.7 million visitors last year, Paris’ world-famous Louvre Museum, home to great works of art like Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo, topped the list, according to The Art Newspaper.
In second place, with 6.8 million visitors was the Vatican Museums, followed closely by London’s British Museum with 6.4 million guests. The fourth most popular museum was The Metropolitan Museum of Art, famed in both cultural and pop cultural circles thanks to the Met Gala and its appearance in films and TV shows like Gossip Girl, which had 5.7 million visitors. Rounding out the top five was another London museum, Bankside’s Tate Modern.
The top ten also includes Shanghai Museum East in China, National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, USA, the National Museum of Korea in Seoul, Paris’ Musée d’Orsay, and Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de Antropología.
Unsurprisingly, the list was dominated by some of the world’s top tourist spots. London had eight museums on the top 100 list; Paris had seven; Tokyo had five, including teamLabs Planets and Tokyo National Museum; Several cities, including Madrid, Moscow, and Washington DC, had four museums make the cut.
Two newbies on the scene made the top 100: teamLab Borderless: MORI Building in Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills, and Shanghai Museum East. The former was a relocation from Odaiba, while the latter is a branch of the original Shanghai Museum.
