Planning a road trip around Norway? We have good news, as the iconic mountain road Trollstigen has just reopened.

Trollstigen, or the Trolls’ Road, is famed for its eleven sharp hairpin bends that wind up from the Isterdalen valley near Åndalsnes to the Stigøra mountain. The road connects Åndalsnes and Valldal, and is one of the country’s most famous routes for roadtrippers.

While Trollstigen is usually open from mid-May until heavy snowfall begins in late autumn, the road had been closed for repair works – until now.

Torunn Dyrkorn, head of tourism at Visit Northwest, and Tom Anker Skrede, Head of Tourism at Destination Ålesund & Sunnmøre, said in a statement, “We are very pleased that Trollstigen is finally reopening after the extensive repair work that has been carried out. The entire tourism industry in the region has been waiting for this, and now we can finally welcome visitors to an open and safer road between Åndalsnes and Valldal once again.”

Those who can’t drive can still enjoy the viewpoints on the Trollstigen plateau, which you can reach by hiking the Kløvstien trail. The plateau opens independently of Trollstigen, and was open from mid-April this year.

Geiranger-Trollstigen is one of eighteen designated Norwegian Scenic Routes. Covering 2,240 kilometres in total, routes include the Lofoten Islands, Helgelandskysten, which is the longest journey with six ferry trips included, and Atlanterhavsvegen, which is famed for its seven bridges through Hustadvika Bay.
