New 100-mile walking path in Devon to open this month New 100-mile walking path in Devon to open this month
A new 100-mile circular walking route in Devon is set to open later this month.
The South Hams Way, which incorporates some already existing paths including South West Coast Path and the Dartmoor Way, will officially open to the public on 14 September.
Split into ten segments covering between seven and 12 miles, the sections have been chosen based on the public transport links at the beginning and end point of each.
Beginning in Totnes, you’ll go through Buckfastleigh, South Brent, Ivybridge, Noss Mayo, Mothecombe, Hope Cove, Salcombe, Torcross and Dartmouth. Along the way, you’ll experience varied landscapes including moorland, river valleys, agricultural land and coastal paths.
The route has three estuary crossings – in section five, from Noss Mayo to Mothecombe, you can wade across the River Erme to the Wonwell slipway during low tide, or take a taxi to continue along your walk; in section six, from Wonwell to Hope Cove, you’ll either need to take the seasonal ferry, or an 8.8-mile detour along the Avon Estuary Walk; and in section seven, from Hope Cove to Salcombe, you’ll need to take a pedestrian ferry to reach the start of section eight.
You can discover the full route on the South Hams Way website.
