With the 100th anniversary of Route 66 coming up in 2026, the great American road trip is back in the spotlight.

Roadside motels are a big part of the nostalgic charm, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on modern amenities as this new book proves. Putting the spotlight on 40 American mid-century motels that have been transformed into boutique hotels, Vintage Motels might just inspire you to book those flights.

Author Ellie Seymour, who is also behind Grand Hotels of the World (2023), penned the book, with the hardbacks set to hit shelves on 15 November.

Each of the motels featured is presented over four to six pages, with a mix of archival imagery showing it in its original form in the 1950s and 60s and contemporary photos post-renovation.

The selected motels span the country, and include the Madonna Inn in California, where no two rooms share the same design; the Trixie Motel in Palm Springs, which is run by drag superstar Trixie Mattel; and The Dive in Nashville, which celebrates all things disco and 70s.

To give you a taste of what to expect, here are just a few of the images you’ll find inside.
