The UK’s most visitedWorld Heritage Site is set to open a brand new section on Friday 22 October.

The Roman Baths, located in the city ofBath, will feature a never before seen Roman Gym area and Laconicum (sauna or steam room).

Visitors can learn about the fitness routines performed by the Romans in an ancient exercise yard, and watch projections about historic sports and workouts, including Trigon (a Roman ball game), Halteres (a type of dumb-bell used in the Roman’s version of the long-jump), wrestling and weightlifting.

The new attraction also includes the remains of a Laconicum, a circular room which was once warmed by underfloor heating (and could get very toasty!)

There’s also the chance to learn about Roman medicine. This practice was centred around the belief that there were four humours in their body, which all needed to be balanced to achieve good health. If not, they were treated using herbal remedies and in some cases, surgery. The items found in a Roman’s surgical bag have a strong resemblance to the instruments used by doctors today.

And finally, there’s the chance to walk through the remains of one of the most complete Roman doorways in Britain.

Stephen Clews, Manager at the Roman Baths and Pump Room said: “This is a significant addition to what you can see at the Roman Baths, telling the story of an important activity in larger bath houses like the one here in Bath.”

There’s so much more to see at the Roman Baths. The well-preserved temple was built around 70AD. Unique thermal springs still fill the baths with hot natural water at the centre of the site. Explore the interactive museum with ancient artefacts, and walk the ancient pavements Romans once did 2,000 years ago.

Entry to the new Roman Gym is included in general admission costs to The Roman Baths. For more information, go to: romanbaths.co.uk
