The rise of the micro-retirement lifestyle
Explore Worldwide uncovers the latest trend of travellers taking those big dream trips before retirement
What if you could take just long enough out from your daily life to pursue your wildest travel dreams without leaving your career behind? That’s the promise of micro-retirement, the bold and latest travel trend redefining the workplace and travel.
In recent years, there has been a growing number of professionals seeking longer breaks mid-career and choosing to take ‘micro-retirements’. This is a clear reflection of how modern work life is evolving, with State Pension Age getting ever further away and pressures of mid-life leaving more people wanting a sabbatical.
Leading adventure travel company Explore Worldwide found that 2,000 employed individuals across the UK would choose to take a micro-retirement. According to the results, 29% of respondents are contemplating a career break, with 48% of those stating travel as their primary motivation.

The data points to a growing appetite for time away from the daily grind and the rise of being able to work flexibly. This new lifestyle can vary from a few months to a year, allowing people to enjoy time exploring the world without having to wait until official retirement age.
As micro-retirements become increasingly popular, new research shows that Europe tops the list of preferred destinations, with 37% of respondents choosing it as their ideal location for time away from work. This is followed by New Zealand and the Pacific at 30%, whilst South America and Africa come in at 11%.
Explore Worldwide’s Managing Director, Micheal Edwards, states that “We’re living longer and working for longer than ever, sometimes we just need a complete break to totally reassess or simply recharge. Our survey highlights a growing appetite for having these moments along the way in life and not waiting for our later years.” He emphasised that younger generations are reshaping traditional career paths by prioritising personal fulfilment and life experiences earlier on. Micro-retirement is a cultural shift where taking time out is no longer a career risk but a sign of long–term growth and resilience.
