For many, a stay at a safari lodge is a once-in-a-lifetime experience – little wonder, given the hefty price tag often associated with a luxury stay.

But if you thought that bucketlist trip to South Africa was out of your budget, think again, because this swanky eco-lodge in the Soutpansberg Mountains has launched a pay-what-you-can initiative.

Guests dreaming of spending time at Few & Far Luvhondo can fill out an application form letting the hotel know what drew them to the property, the preferred dates, number of guests, and what they can contribute financially.

“Travel isn’t a frivolous indulgence, it’s a vital act of connection,” Sarah Dusek, co-founder of Few & Far Luvhondo, said, “It nurtures our well-being, strengthens global empathy, and fuels the preservation of our planet. We launched this initiative with the belief that when you truly experience a place, you begin to care, and when you care, you naturally want to give back.

“By removing cost as a barrier, we’re making transformative, purpose-led travel more accessible without diluting its impact. Today, true luxury isn’t just comfort or exclusivity – it’s a conscious choice. It’s choosing responsibility, choosing connection, and choosing to leave the world better than you found it.”

Few & Far Luvhondo first opened in January 2025, and the eco-lodge runs a number of initiatives guests can get involved with including habitat restoration and carbon sequestration.

Ultimately, the team hope to regenerate over 100,000 hectares of wilderness through ecological restoration, native reforestation, and biodiversity protection, which in turn will sequester over 100,000 tons of carbon annually.

The resort features just six tented suites, each of which is perched on the cliffside and offers unrivalled views of the nearby wildlife including giraffes, zebras and impalas.

Aside from making the most of the views (and your very own plunge pool), Few & Far Luvhondo offers game drives, hiking and mountain biking, as well as the chance to be a conservationist for the day, joining experts who are working on rewilding efforts. You can also visit nearby attractions like the Crystal Salt Pans and Mapungubwe National Park. Plus, the hotel will debut aerial safaris via a solar-powered cable car, Solyrus, later this year.

Keen to apply? You can head over to the Few & Far Luvhondo website now.
