New trail encircling Jersey’s coastline opens New trail encircling Jersey’s coastline opens
If your idea of a dream holiday involves getting your steps in while enjoying coastal views, you might just want to add Jersey to your to-visit list.
The island has just launched the Jersey Tidal Trail, a 48-mile route encircling the coastline. Split into eight sections, you can take on the full route over several days, or choose between easy and more challenging single-day paths to suit your fitness level. Many of the sections can be completed in just an hour, while the tougher parts can take upwards of three hours.
On the easy routes front, walkers can tackle St. Aubin’s Bay, passing by Liberty Wharf, René Lalique’s Glass Church, and Jersey Museum, with views out to Elizabeth Castle. Another easy section passes between Rozel Bay and Gorey Harbour, running alongside Le Couperon, the neolithic dolmen, St. Catherine’s Bunker and Mont Orgueil Castle.
For a more challenging hike, take on the North West Coast, encompassing cliff paths, the Devil’s Hole, and Sorel Point, which boasts views of Sark, Guernsey and France. For experienced hikers, the North-East Coast rewards those who can handle steep cliffs and uneven paths with unbelievable views without the crowds.
The entire route is signposted, but be sure to make a note of the local tide times before setting off as some sections follow the beach at low tide. Certain sections, like St. Aubin’s Bay and parts of St. Ouen’s Bay, can be cycled, should you prefer that.
The full route is available on the Visit Jersey website, and you can also download the trail on Komoot or Strava.
Flights, which take around an hour, operate from numerous UK airports year-round, including London, Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Southampton. You can also take a ferry from Portsmouth, which takes nine hours.
Jersey hit the headlines earlier this year after the second series of the re-imagined Bergerac was released in April. The iconic detective drama, set on Jersey, originally ran between 1981 and 1991.
